Legacy Drives Still in Service: Keeping ABB ACS600, Eurotherm 601, and Yaskawa V7 Lines Running

ABB ACS600, Eurotherm 601 series, and Yaskawa/Omron V7 drives are long out of production, but plenty of them are still doing daily work. Here's the case for keeping them running with pulled spares instead of a forced upgrade.

A drive doesn’t need to be in the current catalog to be doing its job. ABB‘s ACS600 Multidrive platform, Eurotherm‘s 601 series, and Yaskawa/Omron’s V7 family are all long past their original production run, and all three are still common on plant floors — because a working drive on a working line is not a problem that needs solving.

Why replace-in-kind beats a forced upgrade

  • A full retrofit to a current-generation drive usually means new wiring, new parameter setup, and re-validating the whole control loop — real downtime and engineering time for a line that wasn’t broken.
  • A matched replacement module or drive keeps your existing programming, wiring, and operator familiarity intact. Swap it, load the parameters, done.
  • For a single aging line inside an otherwise modern facility, a full platform upgrade rarely pencils out against the cost of stocking one or two spares.

What we’re seeing come through

Right now that includes ABB ACS600 32A Multidrive modules, 178A Multidrive modules for larger motors, an Eurotherm 601 series inverter, and a Yaskawa/Omron S12 series inverter — all pulled from decommissioned systems rather than failures, and all tested-pulled stock rather than scrap.

Planning ahead instead of reacting to a failure

The best time to source a spare for an obsolete drive is before the one on the line fails, not after the line is down.
