The ABB ACS600 Multidrive range shares a common DC-bus architecture across a wide span of inverter modules, which is exactly why it’s easy to order the wrong one. Two modules can look almost identical — same enclosure style, same “ACS600” badge — while being rated for entirely different motor sizes.
What the rating actually tells you
- I2n (rated output current) is the number that matters, not the enclosure size. A 32A module suits motors in roughly the 11–15kW class at 400V; a 178A module is built for something closer to 90–110kW — a different tier of machine entirely.
- U2 (output voltage) and f2 (frequency range) should match your motor’s nameplate, not just “look right” for the mains supply.
- The full type code (e.g. ACN634002030000300902) encodes the exact frame and rating — the last digits are not padding, they’re part of the spec.
Undersizing vs. oversizing
An undersized module will trip on overcurrent under normal load, or worse, run right at its thermal limit and fail early. An oversized module isn’t unsafe, but it’s an unnecessary cost, and on some setups it can affect how cleanly the drive controls the motor at low load. Matching I2n to your motor’s full-load current, with the normal headroom your application calls for, is the whole exercise.
Buying pulled modules
Multidrive modules are commonly sold pulled from decommissioned systems rather than as new stock, since ABB’s own lead times on this generation can be long. That’s a reasonable way to keep an ACS600 line running — just confirm the full type code against your existing module before ordering, and ask whether the seller tested the module or is selling it as pulled/untested.
