Buying a Used VFD or Drive Module: What to Check Before You Order

A used drive is only a good deal if it's the right one. Here's what to verify on the nameplate before you order a replacement VFD, inverter, or drive module.

Replacing a failed drive under pressure — a stopped line, a dead motor controller — is exactly when it’s easiest to order the wrong unit. Two drives in the same product family can differ in current rating, voltage class, or firmware in ways that matter, and the family name on the housing is not the spec that matters.

Match the nameplate, not the label

  • Full type/order code, not just the series name. On multidrive systems especially (ABB ACS600/ACS800, Yaskawa/Omron V7 and F7 families, Eurotherm 601/605), the digits after the series number encode voltage, current rating, and options — get every character.
  • Output current (I2n) and voltage class. A drive rated for a smaller motor will trip on overload; oversizing wastes money and can affect control tuning on some applications.
  • Frequency range and control mode (V/f vs. vector), if your application relies on it — not every replacement in the same family supports the same control method.
  • Mains vs. motor side wiring configuration for modular/multidrive systems — supply modules and inverter modules from the same family are not interchangeable.

Questions worth asking before you buy used

  • Was it tested under load, powered up only, or sold as-is/untested? Ask what “tested” actually meant.
  • Is the keypad/operator panel included, and is it the correct one for that firmware version?
  • Where was it pulled from — a working line being upgraded, or a failure? A drive pulled during a planned upgrade carries far less risk than one pulled after a fault on the same line.
  • Return window if it doesn’t power up or doesn’t match spec once installed.

Why used is often the right call here

For drives that are discontinued or on long lead times from the OEM, a tested-pulled used unit at a fraction of new price is frequently the fastest and cheapest way to get a line back up — provided the spec match is exact. That’s the whole job: confirm the order code, confirm the rating, confirm what’s included, then buy.
