Tip seals get all the attention on Edwards nXDS scroll pumps — but the second life-limiting component is the bearing set. Unlike tip seals, bearings are not field-serviceable, so recognising bearing trouble early changes your options and your costs. Here is how to tell seal wear from bearing wear, and what your realistic service paths are.
How the nXDS protects its bearings
The nXDS is a genuinely dry pump: all bearings, with their lubricant, sit behind a bearing shield that isolates them from the vacuum space. That shield works both ways — lubricant cannot contaminate your process, and process gases cannot attack the grease. It is why nXDS bearings generally live long lives even in chemistry duty. But they remain mechanical components with finite fatigue life, and the orbiting-scroll drive loads them continuously.

A useful field test: with the pump isolated and vented, a healthy nXDS spins smoothly and quietly at start-up. A low-frequency growl that tracks motor speed, persisting after a fresh tip seal, is bearing wear until proven otherwise. Do not keep running a grinding pump — bearing collapse can let the scrolls contact, converting a rebuild into scrap.
Service options, honestly compared
- Factory / authorised depot rebuild. Edwards’ major-service kit for the nXDS family includes the front angular-contact bearings and associated hardware, but fitting is explicitly not a field procedure — it requires disassembly of the drive and correct preload on reassembly. Depot rebuilds are done right but cost a substantial fraction of a replacement pump and take the pump away for weeks.
- Independent rebuild. Competent vacuum service shops rebuild nXDS pumps for less; the quality variable is whether they follow the OEM procedure on bearing preload and use correct parts. Ask what kit they fit and what test report you get back.
- Replace with a tested refurbished unit. Frequently the economic winner: comparable cost to a rebuild, but you receive a pump already bench-verified to base pressure, with a fresh tip seal, and your lab is running again in days. Your worn pump retains core value — sell it on rather than shelving it.
Buying spares: a note on part numbers
Edwards lists the bearing components under its own part numbers within the major service kit; the company does not publish standard bearing cross-references, and internet guesses are frequently wrong. If you are pursuing a self-rebuild anyway, measure the physical bearings and match dimensions and specification with a bearing distributor — do not order on rumour.
